                      1. Why do you think there is a difference between Matthew 5:31-32; 19:3-9 and Mark 10? How do we read the Bible as faithful and intelligent followers of Christ? How do we prevent ourselves from following interpretations just because they are more convenient for use? If you  can, look into divorce and its effects in Jesus' day.
                      2. What do you think Jesus was trying to accomplish through this teaching? Moses allowed divorce because of the hardness of hearts. What does Jesus think of this hardness of the heart? What is God's intention for marriage?

                      4. Do you think Jesus wants people to remain in relationships where people are in danger of physical abuse? What about boredom? What is the Christian process when dealing with problems in a relationship?

                        1. Does the disciples' argument in verses 33-37 about who among them is the greatest have anything to tell us about verses 38-40?
                        2. When have you noticed a tendency in yourself to draw a line dividing people who belong and those who don't? Do those lines exist? If they exist how do our lines compare to Jesus' lines?
                        3. When have you experienced someone labeling you as belonging or not belonging?
                        4. Compare verse 40 to Matthew 12:30. How can these both be true? How does the context of both verses help us answer that question?
                        5. Consider what you believe about spiritual consequences for our actions. Are there consequences in this life and/or the afterlife? How does what you believe compare to what Jesus says in this passage?

                            1. Reflect on your use of your tongue. Do you use it more to build up and encourage or tear down and condemn? Do you often say things you later regret, or do people comment on how uplifted they are by your words?
                            2. How does your use of your tongue affect the rest of your life?
                            3. It has been said that "the tongue betrays the world that is in one's heart". What might your tongue tell you about your heart?

Questions for reflecting on  Mark 7:24-37
                              1. Read Jesus' teaching about the clean and unclean from the beginning of chapter 7 (especially versus 14-23). This teaching comes immediately before today's passage about a gentile woman (unclean) who is asking for Jesus' help. How does this affect how we see Jesus' reaction?
                              2. How would you hear Jesus' words as a) the woman asking for help b) the disciples and c) as those who are reading this passage in the modern world.
                              3. Who might you consider to be "unclean" by the way they look or the community they come from? Whois "clean" to you?
                              4. It was a deep tradition to separate gentiles and jews. What traditions do we hold onto that cause division in our cities and neighbourhoods? How does Jesus' teachings about the clean and unclean tear down those divisions?

Questions for reflection on 1 Kings 2-3
                                  1. God says to Solomon, "Ask for whatever you want me to give you" (1Kings 3:5). What would you ask for? What does Solomon's answer say about his character?
                                  2. Reflect on why we sometimes assume it is necessary to be ruthless when it comes to being "in charge". Is is necessary to be ruthless in business? How does that sit with our vocation as Jesus' disciples?
                                  3. How does obedience to the words of scripture have an effect on the success of out life? How do we understand times when we seem to be being obedient, but life seems to be a series of disasters?

Questions for reflecting on 2 Samuel 14-18
                                    1. How did God bring good out of David's difficult circumstances? How has God used difficult circumstances in your life? See Romans 8:28
                                    2. Reflect on the presence of David's vices and virtues in his sons. Have you noticed your own virtues and vices in your parents or children? What effect has that had on your life, or even the lives of those around you?
                                    3. Why do you think David behaves towards Absalom as he does? What do you think of his parenting strategy? How would you have behaved?
                                    4. Why is David said to be a man after God's own heart? What might this say about how God views you?

Questions for reflecting on Samuel 11:
                                      1. Who is affected by David’s sins? When was a time your sin had an effect on those around you? Would you define sin as “personal” or “communal”?
                                      2. Do you identify more with David, Bathsheba, Uriah, or Nathan? Why?
                                      3. Why did David feel so confident to condemn the rich man in Nathan’s parable, but not see his own sin? When have you tried to pick a sliver out of someone’s eye, when you had a plank in your own (Matt 7)?
                                      4. Why does Nathan tell David a story, rather than accuse him of sin? How do people normally act when confronted with their sin? How do you respond when confronted by your sin?

Questions for reflecting on 2 Samuel 11:
                                      1. How do you feel when you hear that a respected Christian leader has committed a serious sin?
                                      2. When was a time you had to deal with the consequences of a personal sin? Who was effected by it? How did it affect their lives?
                                      3. How do yo think this action entered into David's mind as an option? Was it an action that came out of the blue, or do you think this action is the fruit of a smaller series of temptations, thoughts or sins? What might David have done to prevent this action?
                                      4. Why do we want to cover up sin rather than confess it?
