  1. What does it mean to be born “again” or “from above”?
  2. Have you ever had an experience of being born this way?
  3. 3:16 is one of the most famous passages in the Bible. It can be so familiar we don’t actually think about it. Take time to meditate on it.

  1. How would you define “love of God”? Would you include “For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments.” (vs 3)? Why?
  2. 1 John has a lot to say about love of others and love of God. In reading the letter over what do you learn about these loves?
  3. How is believing Jesus is the Son of God overcoming the world (vs 5)?

Questions for reflection on 1 John 4:7-21
  1. What do you think it means that “God is love” (vs 8) rather than “God is loving”?
  2. In vs. 20-21 we are told that our love for our fellow Christian is a direct reflection of our love for God. Why is there this connection?
  3. John seems to suggest it is easier to love God who is unseen than to love a fellow Christian who is seen. What is your experience?
