  • Tell someone about (or write down) your story with God. How has God been at work in your life?
  • What is it your find attractive about being a Christian? Thank God for this.
Questions for reflection on
  1. The star drew the Magi to Christ. What drew (or draws) you to Christ?
  2. Contemplate the power of Herod and the innocence of the children of Bethlehem. How do the innocent pay for our use of power and for our ideologies? Consider the fear of the powerful.
  3. The Magi came a great distance and offered much, not knowing exactly who this child was. Consider your own devotion and gifts in comparison to your own knowledge of him.
  4. What is Matthew trying to tell us about Jesus through this story about the Magi and King Herod?

    1. What would your reaction be to John the Baptist if you met him?
    2. What does repentance mean to you? How does that relate to John the Baptists understanding? In what way is it preparation for God's comping?
    3. John responded to the crowds, tax collectors and soldiers. What would he say to you if you yelled out your occupation?
    4. How was it that what John was saying was considered "good news" (vs. 18)?

      1. What is your reaction to Malachi's statement about God being a refiner's fire? Is it hopeful? Frighting?...?

      3. What does it mean to be purified/sanctified? Is this done to us, or do we have a part to play in the process? How does that process feel?
      4. Who is the messenger? Who is he preparing the way for?
